My partner Helen and I have a son called Rupert. We’re not the kind of family that stays in on a Sunday, two Jack Russell terriers see to it that at some point we’re either at a National trust venue or at the very least our local park. If we are at home we rarely sit still. I’ve never fussed much over having the stereotypical ‘smile at the camera’ type of pictures to represent us as a family. Instead I try and encapsulate the quirkiness and interactivity that represents us naturally. This is what I try to bring to my style of family portraiture. I might try to add a few safe pictures but mostly it’s about interactivity and freedom.
Most kids love to play in water and I’m not frightened to get a little wet for the sake of making a great picture. If you would really like to push the envelope then let’s make a real day of it and I’ll come to the beach with you. Equally there are places closer to home, the back garden with a hose and splash pool is a great start, alternatively theres usually a stream that’s not too far from home.
I’ve done a number of really great sessions from the family home and sometimes that’s the best option for babies, but there’s nothing better than a little adventure. The curiosity of a child’s mind is often a great starting point for a collection of images that show their personality. Sticks, grass, wildlife and water all bring an element interest.
I love dogs. I’d never leave ours out of a family portrait and yours is welcome too. I’ve never had a cat, snake or gerbil leave the home to be part of the shoot but never say never. Big or small I welcome them all…
